My cousin is looking at buying a new car soon. One of her favorite options is a 2013 Fiat 500 POP, with an automatic (I was sad when she said that). There are great deals on the fiat, and it comes fairly loaded. The only thing that worries her is that the Fiat is a relatively new car, so she doesn't know what the reliability would be like. So what does Oppo think about the 500?

Everyone here has a positive opinion on it. I think around 5 opponauts actually own one as well. Great cars from what I've heard.

The Abarth is a want. The regular 500 is a bit of a Meh.
It's a good car either way.
Hurhurhur, Fix it again Tony

I've never seen a reason to get it over other sub-compacts out there like the Ford Fiesta.

The 500 is much cheaper than the fiesta. The only car close in price in Portland right now is the Chevy Spark, and the Nissan Versa. The 500 comes with more features though.

Seems to me like you can get more car for the same money by going with a small car of a different make. It comes down to what you want out of the car, of course (e.g. styling above all else/ practicality/ value for money, etc) but I can't think of a situation where it'd be my first choice. Unless we're talking about an Abarth, but that's a different animal altogether.

The big thing is that the 500 is listed for $12,500 brand new at some Portland dealers. For a car with plenty of features.

Wow. That's several thousand less than I thought it was going for. Maybe it does make sense in that case. If your cousin feels good about it, and it has a decent warranty, then sure, pull the trigger.

I rented a 500 Pop with the auto for 2 weeks, and I didn't mind it, but that's about the best praise I can give. It's great in the city, easy to park and it's fairly comfortable. But extended highway driving is a bit of a chore if not downright scary depending on what else is on the road.

But when you look at what else is in that class...fortwo, iQ, Spark...I think it's the best choice. It boils down to the reason you'd need that kind of a car in the first place. If you live in a densely populated urban area and don't make use of the interstate that often and don't have a long commute, it's not a bad option. Otherwise, I'd opt for a compact car and take a minimal MPG hit but get a lot of extra comfort and utility.

They're very popular among my wifes friends. I think three of them have them. I've never ridden in one since they don't really fit more than 2 adults.

Never drove one. (too small for me). But every person I have talked to that has one (mostly in parking lots) seems to like it a lot.
